Study plan

Study for the Swedish citizenship test.

Last reviewed 2026-07-10

A good study plan is simple: read one chapter, answer questions, repeat wrong answers and test the full format when you are ready.

Öva Medborgarskap is independent study material. It is not affiliated with UHR, Migrationsverket, Skolverket, or the Swedish state.

Step 1: Read the right material

Start with Sverige i fokus, the study material connected to the test. Do not read everything at once. Take one chapter and write down difficult Swedish words.

Step 2: Practice immediately

After each chapter, answer practice questions. If you answer wrong, read the explanation and return to the chapter before adding more questions.

Step 3: Simulate test day

When the basics feel familiar, take a 60-question mock exam with a 90-minute timer. Then repeat the weakest chapters.

A practical four-week structure

  • Week 1: country, democracy, government, elections and political parties.
  • Week 2: law, media, human rights, work and personal finance.
  • Week 3: welfare, modern history, Sweden in the world, religion and traditions.
  • Week 4: weak chapters, mixed questions and full mock exams.

Build a Swedish vocabulary list

Keep the list small and connected to meaning. For each term, write the Swedish word, a short explanation and one contrast. For example: a region handles much healthcare, a kommun handles many local services, and staten handles national matters.

Review words inside questions rather than only as isolated flashcards. The test checks whether you understand the sentence and institution, not whether you can recite a translation.

Weekly checkpoints

  • Can you summarise each completed chapter in two sentences?
  • Can you explain why the wrong options are wrong?
  • Are yesterday’s mistakes still correct today?
  • Can you read a new Swedish question without translating every word?
  • Does a timed mixed set stay accurate when the topic changes?

Adjust the plan instead of starting over

If one area fails repeatedly, pause new chapters for a day and repair that gap. If the facts are clear but Swedish is slow, reread questions aloud and compare key terms. If time pressure is the problem, add short timed sets before another full mock exam.

Common questions

How long should I study?

There is no universal number of days. Use chapter checkpoints and fresh mock exams to decide what still needs work.

Should I study only in English?

No. English can support understanding, but the official civics test is in Swedish.

Should I begin with mock exams?

Usually no. Read and practise by chapter first, then use mock exams for pace and mixed recall.
