Guide

Swedish citizenship test.

Last reviewed 2026-07-10

The Swedish citizenship test is UHR’s knowledge test about Swedish society. This guide explains the format and how to prepare without confusing practice material with official information.

Öva Medborgarskap is independent study material. It is not affiliated with UHR, Migrationsverket, Skolverket, or the Swedish state.

Who does what

UHR is responsible for the test and official test information. Migrationsverket handles citizenship applications and decides who may be directed to register.

Always check official information before the test day. Use Öva Medborgarskap as practice material, not as a legal authority.

Who may need to take the test

Migrationsverket states that applicants aged 16 to 66 normally need to demonstrate knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society. Some approved school, adult-education or folk-high-school qualifications can satisfy the requirements without this test.

Exceptions may also apply because of disability or other circumstances. Migrationsverket decides whether your evidence is sufficient and whether you receive an instruction letter. A practice website cannot make that decision.

Civics test and Swedish-language test

The first test on 15 August 2026 covers basic knowledge of Swedish society. It is not the separate Swedish-language test. Migrationsverket says a Swedish-language citizenship test will be available no earlier than autumn 2027.

The civics test itself is still in Swedish. English support can help you understand the material, but you must become comfortable reading Swedish questions and answer choices.

Published 2026 format

  • About 60 multiple-choice questions.
  • Four answer choices with one correct answer.
  • 90 minutes of actual test time.
  • Swedish language only.
  • A paper test for the first sitting.

What to study

UHR points candidates to Sverige i fokus. Its 13 areas cover Sweden, democracy, government, elections, law, media, human rights, work, economy, welfare, modern history, Sweden in the world, religion, traditions and public holidays.

Do not study isolated answers only. Learn the relationships between institutions, dates, rights and responsibilities, and practise explaining why each wrong option is wrong.

How the questions work

UHR’s published examples use four answer choices and one correct answer. A question may ask for an institution, period, right or the best description of a situation. A familiar word inside an option does not make the complete statement correct.

Train yourself to notice qualifiers such as mainly, not, forbidden and best. After choosing, explain why the other three options fail. That produces knowledge you can use when the same principle appears in unfamiliar wording.

How to prepare

Start with a free test to see your level. Then read Sverige i fokus chapter by chapter, answer practice questions and finish with mock exams to train pace.

A reliable loop is read, practise, review the explanation, return to the source section and repeat the weak question later. Use full simulations only after the basic topics feel familiar.

From the instruction letter to the result

  • Migrationsverket decides who is directed to the test and sends an instruction letter.
  • The letter allows the candidate to create a UHR account and register when places are open.
  • A test-day notice appears in the account before the sitting.
  • The candidate brings valid identification and follows the notice.
  • The result appears in the account and is reported automatically to Migrationsverket.

If the result is unsuccessful

UHR says an unsuccessful candidate may have another opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge. Migrationsverket decides what applies in the individual case. No next test date is published yet, and another sitting will require a new registration.

Use a weak result as diagnostic information. Separate missing facts, Swedish-language mistakes and time pressure. Reread the weakest chapters and use fresh questions instead of immediately repeating the identical mock exam.

Official information versus independent practice

UHR controls test format, registration, delivery and results. Migrationsverket assesses the requirements and citizenship case. Öva Medborgarskap provides only independent summaries, original practice questions, explanations and digital mock exams.

No study provider can promise a place, predict the official questions or guarantee a citizenship decision. For changing facts such as dates, fees and registration, the latest authority page always takes priority.
