Requirements
Swedish citizenship requirements in 2026.
Last reviewed 2026-07-10
Citizenship requirements are handled by Migrationsverket. The citizenship test is one knowledge requirement connected to the application process.
Öva Medborgarskap is independent study material. It is not affiliated with UHR, Migrationsverket, Skolverket, or the Swedish state.
The test is not the whole application
The test is about knowledge. Other citizenship requirements include proving identity, meeting the residence requirement, living an orderly and honest life, supporting yourself and attending a personal identity check. Always check Migrationsverket for the rules that apply to you.
Residence and identity
Migrationsverket states that the main residence rule for an adult is eight continuous years in Sweden. Different periods apply to some groups, including Nordic citizens, former Swedish citizens, stateless people, refugees, people under 21 and some partners of Swedish citizens.
How time is counted depends on permits, absences and individual circumstances. Applicants must normally prove their identity, and a personal visit to Migrationsverket is part of the process unless an exception applies.
Knowledge requirements
Applicants aged 16 to 66 normally need to show knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society. Approved school, Komvux or folk-high-school qualifications can satisfy some requirements. The civics test is an option for people who cannot show the required knowledge through accepted qualifications.
The civics test is available from August 2026. Migrationsverket says the separate Swedish-language citizenship test will be available no earlier than autumn 2027, with other accepted evidence used during the transition.
How to check which requirements apply to you
An online checklist can explain the rules, but only Migrationsverket can assess your documents and decide whether an application will be approved.
- Open the current Migrationsverket page for your application route.
- Check identity, residence status, residence time, self-support and conduct separately.
- Check which qualifications or documents can prove Swedish and civic knowledge.
- Follow Migrationsverket’s instructions if the authority decides that you need a test.
Self-support and conduct
The adult application also includes a self-support requirement and a requirement to have lived an orderly and honest life. Income, stability, previous support, debts or criminal conduct can affect the assessment. This site does not assess those conditions.
What this app helps with
Öva Medborgarskap helps you study for the knowledge test: Swedish civic concepts, practice questions, chapter repetition and mock exams.
It does not prepare legal documents, assess eligibility, replace Swedish-language evidence or influence Migrationsverket’s decision.
Common questions
Is passing the civics test enough for citizenship?
No. It is only one possible way to meet one part of the knowledge requirements.
Does everyone need the test?
No. Approved qualifications and exceptions can apply. Migrationsverket decides what is required.
Can this site assess my eligibility?
No. Only Migrationsverket can assess an individual citizenship application.
Can an online test confirm that I qualify?
No. It can explain the rules, but only Migrationsverket can assess your documents and decide your case.
