Two knowledge requirements

The Swedish language test and citizenship test are different.

Swedish citizenship rules contain one requirement for Swedish-language knowledge and a separate requirement for knowledge of Swedish society. The civics test starts in 2026; a dedicated citizenship language test comes later.

The 2026 civics test

UHR describes the first citizenship test as a test of basic knowledge about Swedish society. Its published format is about 60 multiple-choice questions, four options with one correct answer, 90 minutes of test time and Swedish as the test language.

The content is based on Sverige i fokus and covers areas such as democracy, government, elections, law, work, personal finance, welfare, history, religion and traditions. Questions on this website are independently written practice, not official exam questions.

The future Swedish-language test

The Swedish Migration Agency says a citizenship test in Swedish will be available no earlier than autumn 2027. The 2026 civics test should therefore not be described as the new language test.

Until the dedicated test is available, specified grades and qualifications may demonstrate Swedish-language knowledge. If accepted evidence is missing, the Agency can determine what test route applies when that test becomes available.

Why the civics test still demands Swedish

UHR states that the civics test is in Swedish. Candidates need to understand the subject and interpret Swedish question wording, negatives and answer options. English, Arabic or Somali support can help learning, but it does not replace practice with Swedish wording.

A practical method is to understand a section in your strongest language, learn its key terms in Swedish and then answer Swedish questions without translation. This shows whether the knowledge survives in the real test language.

Which evidence belongs to which requirement?

The Swedish Migration Agency lists language evidence and society-knowledge evidence separately. SFI D, Tisus and certain other qualifications relate to Swedish-language knowledge. Specified social studies or civic-orientation courses can in some cases demonstrate knowledge of society.

Always use the current Agency list. Course name, level, issuing institution and the exact document can matter, and a private website cannot approve evidence in advance.
