Education evidence
SFI D and the knowledge requirements for Swedish citizenship.

An approved SFI D grade may be a way to demonstrate Swedish-language knowledge. It does not automatically prove knowledge of Swedish society. This guide explains the distinction that short summaries often miss.
Öva Medborgarskap is independent study material. It is not affiliated with UHR, Migrationsverket, Skolverket, or the Swedish state.
The short answer about SFI D
The Swedish Migration Agency's overview of the rules from 6 June 2026 names an approved grade in SFI course D as one way to demonstrate Swedish-language knowledge. Its detailed page describes an approved grade in the highest SFI course as accepted evidence.
Read those formulations with the complete evidence list and document rules. The Swedish Migration Agency, not a school or practice site, decides whether the evidence is sufficient in an individual case.
The SFI grade relates to the language requirement
SFI demonstrates knowledge of Swedish, so it appears under the language requirement. Other examples listed by the Agency include specified school or municipal adult-education grades, Tisus and, during a transition period, certain Swedex results.
A certificate of attendance is not necessarily the same as an approved grade. Check the document requested by the Agency, the course level shown on it and whether it was issued by an accepted education provider.
Knowledge of society is a separate requirement
The Agency lists evidence of basic knowledge about Swedish society in a separate section. It includes certain social studies or civic-orientation courses at specified levels in school, municipal adult education or folk high school.
Do not assume that SFI D alone satisfies both knowledge requirements. A person with accepted language evidence but no accepted society evidence may still need the civics test. The Swedish Migration Agency makes the final assessment.
When can a test become relevant?
If the Agency cannot accept education evidence, it can direct the applicant to a test. The society test is offered from August 2026. Under the current timetable, the separate citizenship test in Swedish is available no earlier than autumn 2027.
The two parts can therefore have different outcomes: the language requirement may be demonstrated while society knowledge remains, or the reverse. Read the decision or instruction letter carefully and contact the Agency if it is unclear.
Documents to check
- The grade is approved and shows the correct SFI course or other education level.
- The name and personal details match the citizenship application.
- You distinguish an attendance certificate from an approved grade.
- You separately check evidence for the society-knowledge requirement.
- You use the latest Swedish Migration Agency list before submitting documents.
Why practise after passing SFI D?
SFI D may remove the need to demonstrate Swedish through a later language test, but knowledge of society can still need proof. Working through Sverige i fokus and Swedish multiple-choice questions trains both the subject and the wording used in the civics test.
Start with a diagnostic test, then focus on chapters where you lack both facts and Swedish vocabulary. This is more efficient than giving every topic equal study time.
Common questions
Do I avoid the citizenship test if I have SFI D?
SFI D may demonstrate the language requirement, but knowledge of society is assessed separately. The Swedish Migration Agency decides whether any test is required.
Is a certificate saying I attended SFI D enough?
The Agency information refers to an approved grade. Attendance or course certificates may not be equivalent. Check the document with the Agency.
Is the civics test the same as an SFI test?
No. The civics test assesses basic knowledge about Sweden, although the test language is Swedish.
